Ever try to catch the perfect wave? Digital Railroad Member Rick Doyle, based in Hawaii, USA, has perfected the technique and tells all:
"I had been experimenting with waterproof camera housings that I mounted to surfboards, wakeboards and water-skis for several years. It was during the winter of ‘88/89 that I attached a still camera to a San Diego Chargers NFL football helmet, screwed it onto Pro surfer, Liam McNamara’s head and shot Pipeline, (one of the most dangerous waves in the world), from the surfers perspective. After overcoming technical problems and flying to and from Hawaii over a period of three months I was rewarded with some sharp, colorful and unique perspectives from inside the barrel at Pipeline. Two waterproof housings were made and attached to the helmet. One held the camera and lens, the other, the radio electronics needed to fire the camera. The camera and electronics housings were counterbalanced with the addition of a small weight mounted to the opposite side of the helmet. The total weight of the contraption was ten pounds."
