The Remarkable World of Peter Menzel

Frequently as I troll through images in Marketplace, I come upon an image that stops me dead in my tracks. More often than not, the credit belongs to Peter Menzel.

Peter Menzel is known for his international photographic coverage of the sciences, world cultures, and the environment. His photos have been published in the world’s best magazines and have garnered many awards. He is the creator and principal photographer for the book Material World: A Global Family Portrait, and is co-author with his wife Faith D’Aluisio of the books Women in the Material World; Robo Sapiens: Evolution of a New Species; and the award-winning Man Eating Bugs: The Art and Science of Eating Insects.

BIT—Baby It—is the prototype for My Real Baby, the most sophisticated robot doll yet made. According to a press release, it is only the "first born" in a series of dolls created from the union of its parent companies, toy giant Hasbro and iRobot, a small Massachusetts robotics firm. Their most recent book, Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, received the 2006 award for best book of the year from the James Beard Foundation and the Harry Chapin Media Award.

They are working on two new books: "Nutrition 101" (101 people documented with a day’s worth of food); and "The End" (death rituals around the world). Menzel’s most-wished-for assignment would be to periodically document the prison life of ex-president George W. Bush.
