Latest in our series on the Digital Railroad sponsored Lightroom Adventure Tasmania photographers is Jackie King. Jackie produces images ranging from hyper-realistic to avant-garde abstraction that define her idiosyncratic style. She honed her photography skills in the United States at the Maine Photographic Workshops and then with fine art photographer John Paul Capongiro. Jackie is the recipient of numerous awards, including UK British Professional Photographer and British Portrait Photographer of the Year, both in 2005. She serves on the board of directors for the British Institute of Professional Photography.

Jackie's Tasmania photos yet again show a different viewpoint on the rich subjects the adventure had to offer.

"It first began after helping on Ground Zero. When the flag HAD to be flying everywhere. It was a strange flurry all over the city, on taxis, in delis.... mostly immigrants. Feeling no particular kinship to any flag, originating from a few countries, I decided to go on the road in my Van with friend/writer to delve deeply into the complexities of patriotism.

Burt Rutan and His Amazing Flying Machines by Jim Sugar

These photos show the test pilots of Scaled Composites, aerospace engineer Burt Rutan's amazing company based in Mojave, California. Rutan & his company designed and built White Knight and SpaceShipOne which together won the $10 million X-Prize in 2005. SpaceShipOne now resides (for all time) in the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

On July 28th, Rutan & Scaled will roll out White Knight II, which will carry a new, larger SpaceShipTwo. SSII will carry a maximum of eight people, six paying passengers and two pilots. It is a suborbital spaceplane for carrying future space tourists. White Knight II is the four-engine lifting body that will haul SSII from the ground to approximately 60,000 feet before releasing the smaller rocket ship.

The photo above shows the group of six test pilots in a group with Burt Rutan and also with White Knight One in the background. The pilots include Mike Melvill, Brian Binnie, Peter Siebold, Matt Steinmetze, Clint Nichols, and Mike Alsbury.

Photographer Jim Sugar has been photographing Burt Rutan and his amazing flying machines for more than 25 years. His first photos of Burt occurred when Rutan founded the Rutan Aircraft Factory in 1983. Since then his photographs have chronicled Rutan's career through several dozen aircraft both in flight and on the ground. At present, Rutan's company, Scaled Composites, employees more than 300 people. Scaled's six test pilots comprise the greatest collection of civilian test pilots ever assembled and arguably the finest collection of test pilots since NASA started the Mercury astronaut program.

Dave Welling: Focusing on Wildlife and the Environment

Dave Welling has been photographing wildlife and the natural environment for almost 20 years and constantly seeks out new locations for scenic and wildlife subjects.

"A self-taught photographer, I began my career "focusing" on wildlife and the environment, two areas I feel very passionate about. I believe if you concentrate on the things you know and love it will be reflected in your work. In the late 1980's I visited the Virungas Mountains in Zaire to photograph highly endangered mountain gorillas (there were less than 500 in the wild at that time). I was one of the last people to photograph the magnificent silverback gorilla, Rugabo, the only mountain gorilla killed in the genocide that struck that area soon after my departure. My images of Rugabo brought home to me the power of photography as a means of recording those precious things we have lost.

Since then, I have concentrated on creating images of wildlife, and their habitat, that capture something of the essence of the animal as well as the environment in which it lives. For over 20 years I have also worked with a phenomenal wildlife rescue facility that has cared for over 50,000 wild animals. At this facility, I have been fortunate to work with and photograph African lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, gray wolves, mountain lions, exotic birds and reptiles and native wildlife, many of which were confiscated from private parties who kept them illegally as pets. I have become very interested in the illegal trade in wildlife for pets and am working on a book about the animals I have known at this facility, including Navarre, a gray wolf, that I helped raise from a small pup and worked with for over 15 years. I hope this book will help alert the public to the magnitude of this worldwide problem that causes significant species loss and habitat destruction."

Adrian Fisk's "iSpeak China": US Exclusive Available in Marketplace

With media coverage for China now focused on the Beijing Olympics, to provide an alternative view of the Chinese and what's on their mind, Digital Railroad member Adrian Fisk makes his "iSpeak China" story set available exclusively in the US through Marketplace.

"For the last few centuries the west has dominated economics, politics and culture. But now there is a shift towards the east, in particular China, a country of 1.4 billion people of which we know little about. It is the young Chinese who will inherit this new found global influence, but who they and what do they think about life. I have just returned from a 12500 km journey through China to find an answer to this question. I looked for young Chinese aged from 16 – 30 years, gave them a piece of paper and simply told them they could write what ever they wanted to on the piece of paper. The results were fascinating."

Each image includes a brief bio about each person depicted in the series and a translation from the Chinese (where needed) for each quote or reflection provided by the subject.
