Digital Railroad Puts Photographer Members and Publisher face to face with each other and the Kodiak Grizzlies...

Led by DRR's Sr. Director of Professional Imaging and pro photographer Ric Kasnoff, today a team of five photographers left from Seattle to Kodiak Island, Alaska where they will board float planes for a 150+ mile flight out to the Katmai Coast for an 8 day, 7night "photo safari" exploring this remote region of Alaska seeking out and photographing the Kodiak Grizzly Bears.

With generous support from sponsors, several members were offered the opportunity for this experience and we will have more opportunities like these for more of our members in other parts of the world. The participating DRR Members include:

Andrea Johnson | Portland, OR, USA | Board of ASMP OR |Editorial | Adventure Sports | Travel
Martin Trailer | San Diego, CA, USA | Editorial | Portraiture APA National 1st Vice-President
Greg Probst | Seattle, WA, USA | ASMP | SAA | Editorial | Portraiture | Travel
Daniel Beltra | Spain/Seattle | Principal Still Photographer-Greenpeace
Stefanie Atkinson | Mill Valley, CA, USA | Art Director | Emmy Winner | Impressionistic Nature | NANPA

The nature of the trip, the remote, isolated setting and the close quarters on the vessel for an extended period will all work to encourage open communication and sharing of perspectives between the group, exactly the things that DRR's founder and CEO, Evan Nisselson has been promoting over the years as what is needed to help photographer members of Digital Railroad expand their knowledge and effectiveness in our ever changing industry.

To share the experience with the broader DRR member community and the photo industry as a whole, DRR plans a series of blogs and stories relating the experience from all who are participating in this community adventure. Says DRR President and Industry veteran Charles Mauzy, "Our goal is, and has always been, not only to provide the tools and technologies to our member photographers which increase their ability to manage, market, license and sell their images, but to insure they have the opportunity and knowledge to use these tools efficiently and effectively. Programs like this one and the sharing of the experience with our other member photographers, buyers and the broader imaging industry are designed to meet that goal."

The photo safari continues through Friday, June 29th. With the help of Gary Halpern, Publisher of PhotoMedia Magazine, who is also accompanying the group, we will share stories and learnings resulting from the experience both during the trip and after. Look for images (and videos) on this blog and in Marketplace as they become available.

Wow, nice one. I'm actually just back from Alaska (to Ireland). Spent most of my time at sea off Seward and Homer, and trekking in Denali. In the midst of editing my shots at the moment, but they'll be on DRR very soon...

Member Profile: David Chalk

Behind the Image: "I was young and on a roll, having recently received a CAPS grant and my first New York Times cover story for the Magazine section.

I was shooting Hassidic Jews in Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn and got word that the Lubovich Rebbi was speaking in the area. I arrived at the Synagogue and the room was packed, it was impossible to get in. It was Winter and the walls "sweated" from the heat of all those bodies.

My friend and I went to the roof, climbed down a fire escape and over a huge air conditioning duct to arrive at a small balcony, on the balcony was a young boy looking through a hole in the window at the celebration inside.

I only had time for one exposure .... zone focusing my Leica M4. It was a lucky shot and is still one of my favorite images thirty years later."

About David Chalk: "I was originally a magazine photographer and then I did a lot of corporate work and some advertising as well. I traveled a lot on assignment and on my own. I seemed to be drawn to unusual stories, The Ku Klux Klan, prison rodeos, police emergency service unit , tattoo conventions etc.

In the 90's I took a break from photography and worked a a special effects animator on feature films and made for TV movies. I am about to embark on a new but related field. I will be shooting a documentary film on Survivors ... people who have lost loved ones to Suicide. I recently celebrated my one year anniversary as a Suicide Prevention hotline volunteer."

Universal News & Sport Scores Major Coverage

bomber004-Comp.jpg
© Universal News & Sport (Scotland)

Stephen Mansfield, Picture Editor for Universal News & Sport, reports: "It was the biggest story in Scotland for years when two Asian terrorists attacked Glasgow Airport on Saturday 1st July by ramming a flaming Jeep Cherokee into the main terminal building. Thankfully the hapless attackers were subdued by police, the public and airport staff, thus avoiding what could have been a major catastrophe on a level with the Pan Am atrocity in Lockerbie.

Our agency, a DigitalRailroad member, was there within the hour, but it was impossible to get near the scene of the incident for security reasons.

However, we did obtain some stunning images from a Spanish tourist who was on the spot as he was checking in to go back home to Lanzarote. After agreeing very amicable syndication rights, we were able to transmit his images all over the globe and few people will argue that it has become one of the most iconic images of 2007.

Digital Railroad and its very efficient FTP software helped us enormously on the night and helped smooth the way, for what was our agency's most memorable experience so far in our short existence."

Images uploaded to Universal's Digital Railroad archive were licensed globally and included premier news publications including:

London Times-- Front Page
Daily Telegraph--- Front Page
Most other UK papers
New York Times--- Front Page
Exclusive in Germany with Stern Magazine
All Major Australian Newspapers including Sidney Morning Herald

Digital Railroad member Sean O'Riordan was recently featured in the Czech publication "DigiFoto". In this two page spread O'Riordan was interviewed about his passion for Architectural Urban Landscapes. The article also included two of O'Riordan's shots from a series he did on downtown Los Angeles.

Thomas L. Kelly was born in Santa Fe and educated at Loyola University of Chicago and in Rome. He is an iconic reference here in Kathmandu. With patience and sensitivity he focuses his camera on the Kumari, then living Goddess; HIV/AIDS plagued prostitutes, the “Fallen Angels” of South Asia; the Sadhus, holy men dressed in ashes; the Kayapo, cultural tribe in Brazil, staring implacably at the lens.

One of the breed of photojournalist-explorers, willing to risk, to witness, he documents among an eclectic mix of subjects: polo-playing in Mongolia, the rat children of Pakistan, or Pilgrim’s progress-prostration foot by the painful foot in the difficult road to Mt Kailash.

His latest book, “Sacred Landscapes and Pilgrimage in Tibet”, illustrates the dreamscapes we’d all like to see with our own eyes, Few seek out and find grace in the most unexplored, unexpected places. He discovers faces in landscapes and landscapes in faces. Winner of numerous awards, recipient of a Gates Foundation grant.

Matthew Anderson: The Denali Experience

© Matthew Anderson Photo/drr.net

Matthew Anderson is based in both Seattle, WA and Zürich, Switzerland. He specializes in adventure lifestyle and adventure sports photography spending several months each year traveling and shooting in Europe, Asia and North America. His approach is "photojournalistic" but Matthew works primarily as a stock photographer.

I've been building a collection of mountaineering images made on three different expeditions to Mt. McKinley, AK in 2005 and 2006 that I call "The Denali Experience." For some time, it had been a goal of mine to climb and photograph the 20,320 ft. peak.

From late May through early July the mountain bustles with activity as climbers from all over the world flock to the tiny town of Talkeetna, AK where they arrange bush flight transportation onto the Kahiltna Glacier, the starting point for the most popular climbing route up Mt. McKinley, via the West Buttress.

My background as a newspaper photojournalist came bursting to the surface one day as a specially equipped high-altitude rescue helicopter came flying into camp to rescue an injured Korean climber. For a brief moment it felt like I was chasing spot news at 14,000 ft. Suddenly, 50 yards into my 100 yard dash to the landing area, I was nearly brought to my knees in breathlessness reminding me that this was no lowland news chase.

"The Denali Experience" reflects my "like you were there" vision for adventure photography and also demonstrates the kind of challenges that I enjoy working through on assignments. More than anything else, it was just good clean fun behind the camera.

That’s just fabulous! Thanks so much! I really appreciate the additional exposure.

Best,

Matt

Digital Railroad member Simon Norfolk's images of Mayan ruins are featured in the current issue of National Geographic Magazine.

In producing these unique images for this story Simon tells us they were created "on my wooden 5x4 using slow colour neg. The camera suffered a little in the jungle, warping a little in the damp heat. We used 10 x 2.5kw generators and 12 x 1000w Lowell tungsten lamps. A crew of 7 plus a few local helpers most days. The shoot was 9 weeks in all."

Simon is among several members in the Digital Railroad community whose work have been featured in previous issues of National Geographic including:
Stephen Alvarez
Ed Kashi
Randy Olson
Alexandra Boulat
Joachim Ladefoged
James Nachtwey
John Stanmeyer
